Surround Sound

I am trying to improve my viewing experience, so I bought a surround sound system. But I don't seem to be getting any surround sound from ppv movies. Is it just the movies that are on now, or is it viewsat?

How do you have the cables connected?
So you're saying you get 5.1 (assuming) surround sound from regular channels and not PPV?
I found that some DVD movies that i've watched didn't completly utilized the rear speakers, only durring raining scenes, helicopter scenes and perhaps loud explosions. Crank your rear speakers, watch an action movie and listen for sounds at the rear speakers. (I know you didn't say it was a DVD)

Someone correct me if i'm wrong on this but, regular channels are in 2.0 surround sound so it doubles up the fronts and brings them to the back which seems like you're getting a surround experience. Don't take my word for it though, I'm saying this because both of my sound systems (TV and PC) do this.

Did you try changing the sound settings on your surround system?

Thanks for the response.

The cables are connected. Testing the speakers work. A demo that came with the system works fine. So are PPV channels also 2.0? or does it just depend on the movie?

I did play around with the settings a little bit, but I will be the first to admit that I don't know what I am doing.

Thanks again.

i find the best bet, depending on the placement of your speakers, to lower the center channel volume (usually where the voices come from) and raise the volume of your rear speakers. Like stated above, most movies only utilize the rear speakers for background noises such as rain or explosions so cranking those up will enhance the 5.1 sound. Also make sure your using thr right cables..with the vs9000, i use a fiber optic (toslink) cable. If your using the regular rca (red & white) audio cables, your not getting true 5.1 surround from the vs to your rcvr. the rca cables only send 2 channel audio whereas the fiber optic can send all channels 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, and 8.1

It would depend on the movie and the channel. FWIW, I have the STB connected via HDMI to my TV and from there the "audio out" to my inexpensive home theater system via standard RCA jacks.

Regardless, I still DO experience true surround sound ... depending on the channel, and more often when I'm on an HD channel (BEV or D/n).

HTH...

With your RCA jacks, your tv is sending 2 channel audio (right/left) to your stereo rcvr and your rcvr is "simulating" a surround sound mode. It is not a true surround sound where each channel is being sent to your rcvr and your rcvr is not altering the sound, but just relaying it to the appropriate speaker. Though, today's rcvr's, even a low end one, do a great job of "simulating" surround sound modes.
