“The clever combatant imposes his will on the enemy, but does not allow the enemy's will to be imposed on him.”
- Sun Tzu, “The Art of War”
Current UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre may not have studied the famous text by Chinese General Sun Tzu, but he certainly employs his strategies in all of his fights.
Whether it was out wrestling Josh Koscheck, putting a ground clinic together against Matt Serra, or simply overpowering Matt Hughes, St. Pierre has taken the best weapon away from each of his opponents and made it his own strength.
Now St. Pierre faces his toughest challenge to date at UFC 87 when he faces top contender Jon Fitch, who is an extremely well rounded and dangerous fighter in all parts of his game. Despite the odds making him a huge favorite, St. Pierre isn’t looking past Fitch at all.
“A lot of people make me try to see through Jon Fitch and I don’t want that. I made a mistake once, I don’t want to do it again,” said St. Pierre alluding to his loss to Matt Serra. “Jon Fitch is probably the most dangerous guy I’ve fought so far, he’s a new breed of mixed martial arts fighter. Very well rounded.”
The last time St. Pierre attempted to make the first defense after winning his title, he ran into another underdog named Matt Serra. When the night ended, the Canadian left without the championship gold around his waist. He doesn’t plan on lightning striking twice.
“I’m going to be able to succeed where I failed last time,” St. Pierre said simply.
What he has done since the loss to Serra has been simply a matter of preparing and putting together the perfect game plan for victory.
“The general who wins the battle makes many calculations in his temple before the battle is fought. The general who loses makes but few calculations beforehand.”
- Sun Tzu, “The Art of War”
Like reading from a game winning playbook, St. Pierre and his team of coaches have already formulated what they will do to defeat Fitch. Now it’s just up to the champion to make it happen.
“I have a strategy coming into the fight, but it’s like when you play cards, you don’t want to show your hand. But you can be sure I have something planned for him,” said St. Pierre.
“The way I do it, I try to think what is he going to plan to do and I do something to mess up his plan. Like a chess game, and I’m very good at chess.”
Regarded as one of the toughest match-ups in all of MMA, St. Pierre is ready to once again put his training to the test when he faces Fitch at UFC 87 on Saturday night.
“I’m not going to let my opponent dictate my game plan. I’m going to choose where the fight will go. I’m going to take care of business,” he stated. “I will give this fight a pace, a rhythm that he’s not going to be able to keep up the whole fight, and he’s going to crash. He’s going to fail sooner or later.”
It would seem that St. Pierre has already mapped out his victory before the battle begins which could make him the most dangerous fighter the UFC has seen yet.
“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.”
