Telesat Wins Key Spectrum Licenses

Telesat Wins Key Spectrum Licenses

This week, Canadian satellite operator Telesat was awarded six "approvals-in-principle" for the development of BSS (broadcast satellite service) and FSS (fixed satellite service) frequencies by government regulator Industry Canada.

The spectrum covers key orbital locations. There are four in the BSS band, one each at 72.5-degrees, 82-degrees, 86.5-degrees and 118.7-degrees. There's also an award for Ku-Band frequencies at the 111.1-degree orbital location and another covering Ka-Band at the 118.7-degree position.

The BSS band is specifically designed to serve as a broadcasting platform, capable of delivering direct-to-home services to small dishes. Telesat said it plans to use the extended Ku-Band location for DTH service in Canada. And Ka-Band is currently in use on Telesat's Anik F2 and Anik F3 satellites, and will be utilized on the soon-to-be-launched Nimiq 4.

Telesat said it is seeking interest from broadcast, enterprise and government customers and any other entities in Canada interested in developing services from the orbital locations.
