Cool nano 2

Thanks goes to Kenmo for putting this review together.

C/P
The Nano2 is the first receiver that CNX has released that was designed for connection to the internet for using IKS. It has a built in ethernet chip so all you need to do is connect the ethernet to RS232 adapter and connect an ethernet cable to the receiver and set it all up and enjoy some TV.

I bought this receiver over a month ago on the day it was released to the US market....only to see that the IKS system for it was kinda lousy...so I would not even consider hooking it up until they showed a little stability. It looks like they did take the needed steps to get some stability, from what I have been seeing the system has been up for a couple of days with no major issues...

So this morning I finally got it out of the box and brought it to life...here is my experience with it..

At 0740 this morning I grabbed the box from under the sofa. Took it out of the box for the second time. Unhooked the SV Premier from its spot and connected the Nano2. It looks good. I like the smaller size of it as it is the same size as the Kbox and the Coolsats as compared to the size of the SV unit. It is a sleek looking receiver, all black...nice. It has the standard door on the front of the unit that covers the usb port.

I have it connected to a Dish500 with a DPP quad lnb, so I need no diseqc switch. It is connected to a 42 inch plasma screen via component cables (red, green, blue) for video. Using the spdif port for audio via fiber optic cable.

I have it connected to the internet via Netgear XE102 Powerline adapters to make the use of IKS and home streaming possible. I have experienced no issues with this setup.

I turned it on for the first time. Display is green led. Pretty standard. What I do not understand and do not really care for to this point is the glaring red light that glows insidiously when the receiver is powered on. The green one that is there when the unit is in standby is fine. But the red one..jeez...it needs to go away.

The main splash screen on it is OK, nothing fancy, basic blue/gray screen with images to select for different options. I do like the way when you select the different sections it lists the options that are in that section.

I loaded the latest file to the receiver via usb...NPN_1[1].15.zip..it loaded quick and easy. No problems.

Then I went into the menus to enter my dish settings. Now this part kind of baffled me. Selecting the sats that I wanted to add was simple enough. But I could not for the life of me find where to set the lnb type. One thing that I do really like is the way the DiSEqC switch selection screen is set up. It has them listed out with the sat list for each one, and underneath that is the LNB freq. selections. You have to click on the lnb freq. selection, and then that changes to the LNB type selection. Where normally a DPP lnb setting is listed as OCS/DP, on this unit it is listed as Dishpro1. Was a little bit aggravating having to go through them all to make sure that is what I wanted.

After entering my dish settings, it was time to scan the channels into the receiver. This was simple, just select Channel Search from the installations menu, double check your sat name and your antenna settings and select Search. The search was pretty quick, especially since it was the first time the unit had scanned. Took about 5-7 minutes to scan in Echo7 and 8...I was impressed. It did a complete scan and got all of the available channels on the first try. Nice.

Now it was time to set up the Network and get connected. I went to the Installation menu and selected Network and then IP Setup. It has options for how to do it. I selected Automatic. Within a few seconds, all the needed network settings were entered. Very nice. Only pressed one button.
Then I exited that screen and scrolled down to IKS registration and pressed OK. I exited all the way back out and went to a channel that is supported by the network. In about 10 seconds, BAM, had a picture. This may well be the easiest to set up of all the receivers I have set IKS up on. In the time that I have had it on, I have only seen two small freezes, less than two seconds each. Props to the guys.

I went back into the Menus and selected Accessory. Here we have options for Smart Card and Key Works. I did not mess with the smart Card Option for obvious reasons, but I did go in a set the Autorolls and EMU to off just to see if it made a difference. As far as I can tell it did not.

It has been about four hours now since I did the initial setup. Lets talk picture quality. It has a good picture. I would rate the picture as a little better than my Viewsat units, not quite the same quality as my Coolsats and Kbox. I have done a side by side comparison of them all, with them all connected the same way on the same TV, so I am comfortable making this comparison. You can adjust the picture settings, color and all that stuff...the picture did improve with adjustments that I made.

Channel change is quick.

The remote...the remote is small, well laid out...one drawback to the remote I have found is it can not be programmed to control other components such as a TV or sound system.

Audio quality is good from what I can tell. Clear and sharp. I have mine connected to a Sony 5.1 Home Theater system.

The info bar is one of the best I have ever seen and give you lots of info. One of the best things about it is the fact that it not only tells you what in playing at that time, but it also tells you what is coming on next. Super nice. Other than that, it has all the basic information on it that most brands do.

The guide is nice. It is very clear, and the information is very clear and easy to read. It has a small window that shows what is on the channel you are on, a box that tells what channel you are on and has the description of what is showing on that channel. the colors are blue, gray, white and yellow. Looks very good.

The PVR. The PVR on the unit works very well. I have recorded to a Maxtor One Touch 320gb HDD and an 8gb thumb drive. I have manually started recordings and programmed them to start at a later time automatically. I also have set it up where it had to change channels and start recording. It all seems to work fine. As far as the PVR functions, the only thing I find lacking is the Time Shift function.

At this point I am very satisfied with this receiver. It is affordably priced, easy to use, looks nice, and has all the features you need. If I could have one thing added, it would be a second USB port in the back.
