With your RCA jacks, your tv is sending 2 channel audio (right/left) to your stereo rcvr and your rcvr is "simulating" a surround sound mode. It is not a true surround sound where each channel is being sent to your rcvr and your rcvr is not altering the sound, but just relaying it to the appropriate speaker. Though, today's rcvr's, even a low end one, do a great job of "simulating" surround sound modes.
